On est champion!

You may have heard (but probably not) that France won the World Cup of soccer this afternoon. This is incredibly huge here.

Imagine that the NFL was worldwide, and teams didn’t represent cities, but countries. Imagine further that the US had won the Super Bowl ten years ago, but hadn’t been very close since. But this year, with a group of young guys who had more heart than talent, the US won.

That’s what it has been like here.

The French players are all young. They have won in the elimination rounds, but not with a take charge attitude. During the game against Uruguay, they really came into their own. It’s really been dominance since.

At home, soccer seems boring. But here, it is amazing. Every move, every pass, every shot is discussed and analyzed. It really makes the sport come alive.

So tonight, every person is the street is a friend, a compatriot, especially if you speak
French! So much better for our students.

We teachers were not with the students during the match, they were with their families. But I am sure that each student was in front of a screen, watching the game. I don't have images of them enjoying the festivities,

Afterwards, I saw Brest alive like I have never seen before. And I am sure it was like that in many cities in France.

It is literally four hours after the end of the match, and I can still hear car horns and shouting in the streets. It’s likely to go on for a while.

Be sure to ask your student how their family celebrated the incredible win!
